Fiji’s National Triage training and introduction/adoption of the South African triage Scale

In 2016 Fiji adopted the South African Triage Scale (SATS). The training of the nurses was then undertaken by the National Triage Training Group spearheaded by Mamatuki Sosefo. The group trained nurses around the country and along side ran the training of the trainers for potential instructors to help train other nurses with the main team. The group along with new instructors continue to train new nurses on annual basis. The national triage group trained nurses in Suva, Labasa and Lautoka with a large scale of nurses attending from other smaller district hospitals and health centres. The SATS was adopted as it was more suitable, easy to teach and safer for nurses to practise. Fiji, however, still uses the Mental health assessment and classification/categories of the Australasian triage system.

Video aided teaching on recognition of different breath sounds, capillary refill time and assessing dehydration in children during training in Lautoka.
