SCIP: Safe Care in Practice

SCIP is a one-day course designed to outline key concepts of safe nursing care for ward and clinic nurses. It is designed to be taught by local trainers who have completed the PENT program and are familiar with core concepts of structured assessment and recognition of emergent critical conditions.
Modules cover the following areas:
-
What vital signs tell us
-
Structured assessment (ABCDE)
-
Recognition of life-threatening conditions such as shock and sepsis
-
Recognition of the deteriorating patient and escalation of care
-
Use of tools: structured communication (I-BAR), PAT, SAMPLE and ABCDE
The format is half a day of slides and half of practical simulation, with participants receiving a certificate of attendance but no formal assessment. Although the slides are in English, trainers are actively encouraged to teach in their own language and adapt presentations as needed to suit the specific needs of the nurses they are teaching. To date, the course has been taught to over 150 Nurses, Midwives and Nurse Aides from Kiribati and Vanuatu, including staff working on a remote Outer Island.
SCIP trainers each receive a pack of resources, including all materials on a USB, laminated posters and a hard copy of the SCIP PowerPoint presentation. They are mentored via a group chat on either WhatsApp or messenger, depending on country preference, and data is collected on training to provide visibility and support to nurse education.
As well as the SCIP material, which is generally taught over one full day, additional CNE modules for short sessions are provided. Currently, these include: Asthma management, Trauma in Pregnancy, ABCDE assessment of paediatrics, BLS and CPR for security and ambulance drivers.
Train the Trainer - SCIP
-
The Train the Trainer Program is designed to support the skills and leadership qualities of selected graduates from the PENT to provide an educational resource for clinic, ward and Outer Island nurses as well as adjunctive staff such as security and ambulance drivers.
-
Trainers undergo initial training and an ongoing mentoring program which accredits them to teach the SCIP course using a resources pack as listed above.
-
Competency is maintained by teaching a min of 8 hours of material every 12 months either as a one day course or in short CME modules.
The commitment and ingenuity of trainers is shown here in the innovative mannikin designed by SCIP Trainer Bwebwenteang from the Kiribati School of Nursing and Health when she took the program to a group of nurses stationed on Tab.North.
